The Fort St. John 50-unit Passive House apartment project originated from a partnership between BC Housing and BC Hydro to develop a highly energy-efficient affordable rental housing in Fort St. John, BC. Constructed by WCPG, the building completed in January 2019. LHRa was the lead designer and coordinating professional. The program consists of two- and three-bedroom suites, common interior and exterior amenity spaces, fitness room, outdoor playground, and landscaped rain gardens. The visual character of the project was achieved through a bent form and precise façade treatment, utilizing passive solar techniques.
The building was the largest passive house building of its kind in Canada at time of construction, and the first northernmost multi-storey multifamily building in the world to achieve the international Passive House Standard. The project was selected as Special Award "Siga Airtightness Award" of the 2021 International Passive House Award, and the winner of Residential (Large) category of 2022 SABMag Canadian Green Building Awards.
