This project creates a much needed new library in the north end of Nanaimo and modernizes the existing VIRL Central Services building. Inspiration for the design derives from the natural beauty of the site; to make a visceral connection with the surrounding fir trees, capture filtered daylight into the heart of the building and establish the library as a transparent and important civic community space within North Nanaimo.

The programmatic complexities of the library functions are delineated through ‘ribbons’ of space that extend into the landscape, expanding the south exposure and articulating the interior spaces with undulating forms, creating spatial transitions punctuated with natural light. Douglas fir columns, beams & cantilevered fir decking are incorporated to support the primary gathering spaces such as lounges, study areas and work stations. Lower roof forms enclose flexible meeting rooms, quiet study and book displays. Sustainable qualities include: bownfield redevelopment, flexible space design, passive solar techniques, end-of-life building upgrades, high efficient mechanical design, on-site water retention and durable envelope.
