Crosstown Mixed-Use Affordable Housing
Victoria Cool Aid Society
Project Description
The Crosstown Mix-use Development revitalizes a piece of underutilized land in the Burnside Gorge community of Victoria. Owned and operated by the Victoria Cool Aid Society, the project consists of 154 homes of varying sizes, ranging from studios to three-bedroom suites, accommodating supportive, affordable, and work/live housing. The mixed-use program also includes a community daycare, a café & commercial kitchen, an artist’s hub, a community health clinic, retail and commercial office spaces, bicycle storage and two levels of underground parking.
The building design unites a diverse program of housing needs and support services with a strong urban presence that fosters both privacy and community, while promoting commercial viability at street level. The building form creates a generous south-oriented plaza complemented with a grove of robust shade trees and rain gardens, while also providing semi-private and private outdoor spaces that connect people with their homes, their neighbours and their community.
