Interurban Library

As part of the second phase of library renovations at Camosun College, the re-design of the Interurban Library has created a gathering place for the many groups within the campus. Creating an open plan to allow for views and access to daylight were instrumental in the design. The new 12,500 square foot library provides a combination of spaces for student learning: open study spaces, group study rooms, meeting rooms and a large silent study room. Client consultation throughout the design resulted in a space which is well used and well loved.

The design also wanted to pay homage to the courses being taught at Interurban, namely the Trades, Fine Furniture and Visual Arts, by highlighting the art of craft, and focusing on a finer attention to detail. This is particularly evident in the design of the ceilings and millwork, which includes a periodicals unit with display cases for student works. Colour and signage are used for easy wayfinding, and also help to create a fresh and inviting space.
